Haåland and Kerr win FWA Awards

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland won the prestigious Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year award after his impressive debut season in England, it was announced Friday.

Haaland, who has been imperious this season, won the prize by a record margin, earning 82% of the vote ahead of Arsenal players Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, who finished second and third respectively.

Elsewhere, Chelsea striker Sam Kerr became the first back to back winner of the Women’s Footballer of the Year. The Australia international gained twice as many votes as second place Rachel Daly,  while Kerr’s teammate, Lauren James came third.

Messi tenders apology after PSG suspension

Lionel Messi has apologised to Paris Saint Germain for missing Monday’s training session, because he had travelled to Saudi Arabia to promote the country’s tourism industry. 

Messi, who was given a two week suspension, posted a message on social media saying he was on his way to Riyadh when players were told their day off had been cancelled. The 35-year-old, who has also been fined by the club, has a role as a tourism ambassador for Saudi Arabia. He was pictured in Riyadh on Monday and advertised his presence in the country on his social media.

Lampard to continue as Chelsea caretaker despite terrible start

rank Lampard will see out the season as Chelsea manager, sources told Blacks Sports Live. The club appointed Lampard interim manager until the summer on April 6, and that will remain the case despite their continued poor form.

Chelsea were beaten at home 2-0 by West London rivals Brentford on Wednesday night, making it five defeats in five for Lampard. The club’s process for a new permanent manager remains ongoing – with Mauricio Pochettino the current frontrunner – and the intention is for him to take over at the end of the season. Man City knock out Bayern, Milan shock Naples, and all the quarterfinal showdown
