Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales has been subject to heavy criticism after allegedly kissing Women’s World Cup winning midfielder, Jennifer Hermoso on the lips during the trophy ceremony following the 1-0 victory over England on Sunday. The incident, which diverted much attention away from the players’ amazing achievement in the competition came as Hermoso and her teammates were receiving their medals from FIFA president, Gianni Infantino and Spain’s Queen, Letizia on the podium at the Accor Stadium.

Spain win the 2023 Women’s World Cup

After a tense and incredibly competitive game on Sunday, Spain ended up coming out on top in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final with a hard fought 1-0 victory over England at Stadium Australia in Sydney. The Spanish women national team won their first Women’s World Cup title after beating England courtesy of Olga Carmona’s first half goal, handing Sarina Weigman only her second loss since her appointment in 2021.

Brazilian football sensation and legend, Neymar has joined Saudi pro league side, Al Hilal from PSG, ending a roller coaster six year spell at the French club. Neymar joined PSG from Barcelona in 2017 for a world record fee of 222 million euros. He scored 118 goals in 173 matches over six seasons that were disturbed with several injuries. He won five Ligue 1 titles and three French Cups, but lost a Champions League final that would have been career-defining to Bayern Munich in 2020.

Manchester City win the UEFA Super Cup

Manchester City won the UEFA Super Cup for the first time in their history, after beating Sevilla 5-4 in a penalty shootout at the end of a thrilling 90 minutes between both sides.
The shootout was going so well for both teams, with all of the first nine converted, until defender Nemanja Gudelj struck his penalty against the crossbar to hand Manchester City the victory. This was a sense of deja vu for Man City, who lost to Arsenal in the same situation in England’s Community Shield just 10 days ago. It was the 15th trophy won by Manchester City under manager Pep Guardiola’s reign which started in 2016, averaging a trophy win per 27 games.

Bellingham shines in La Liga debut

20 year old England wonder midfielder, Jude Bellingham, scored on his competitive Real Madrid debut as they began their La Liga season with victory at Athletic Bilbao.
The former Birmingham youngster, who joined the Spanish giants for €103+30m in addons from Borussia Dortmund this summer, got Real’s second goal when he volleyed in from close range in a set piece situation, thus, becoming the first English player to score in a competitive game for Real since David Beckham in 2007.

Arsenal win the Community Shield

Arsenal have started the English football season on the front foot by getting the better of Manchester City to win the Community Shield on Sunday afternoon. Arsenal beat City 4-1 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regular time to win the Football Association’s Community Shield at Wembley Stadium, a match that serves as a traditional curtain raiser to the season. The match is typically played between the winners of the last season’s Premier League and FA Cup, but because City won both as part of the title treble (also containing the Champions League for the first time).

Manchester City sign Josko Gvardiol

Manchester City have completed the signing of Leipzig and Croatian defender, Josko Gvardiol, in a deal worth €90m (£77.6m). The Manchester club won the race for Croatia international, amid interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid. Gvardiol underwent a physical on Friday and has now signed a five year deal with the treble winners.

David Silva retires from football after long term injury

The 37 year old played 436 games across 10 seasons at the Manchester club, having a hand in City’s journey to becoming the best team in England, winning a total of 11 major honours with the club.
