Manchester United bow out of Europe after getting beaten by Bayern Munich courtesy of a Kingsley Coman strike from close range. Bayern had already secured top spot before visiting Old Trafford and it had been suggested that manager Thomas Tuchel may consider resting some of his senior stars against United, however, that was not the case and a full-strength Bayern secured a deserved victory thanks to a 70th-minute strike by Kingsley Coman, who fired past Andre Onana from eight yards after a fine assist by Harry Kane.

The loss to Bayern means they would neither qualify for the next round of the UEFA Champions League nor the Europa League playoffs, as they finished rock bottom of the group A. This was a disappointing feat as United, alongside Bayern due to their dominance were tipped as favorites by bookies and experts, but Copenhagen surprisingly got the better side of Galatasaray to qualify for the next round.

United departed having not only been beaten by all three opponents, but with no team in the competition having conceded as many goals as they did, with their only victory in six attempts needing a last minute penalty save from Andre Onana.

United did not seem to be at their worst, as they appeared motivated and were full of energy when chasing the ball, making Bayern uncomfortable for an hour, even though they lacked quality and productivity in the final third which they were later punished for by the German side.

There was a smattering of boos, the sound of seats clattering and supporters shuffling quietly into the night as the game ended. They had done their grieving after Galatasaray, but hoped for a miracle of beating Bayern and hoping for a draw in the other fixture on the night.

It is not how things should be for Manchester United given their means but it is the reality to which they have become accustomed. A decade of disappointment. A club contemplating the need to turn another corner. But with no idea in what direction they are going.
