Having the ability to score with his strong and weak foot, coupled with his unique skill of passing that glides through the defence, one midfielder who’s often in the best midfielder debate is Kevin De Bruyne. The Manchester City midfielder and Belgian international is one of the few midfielders who have all abilities in one. His passing is top notch, alongside his goal scoring abilities which is one of the best in the world for a midfielder, but there’s one question on people’s minds. Is Kevin De Bruyne really the best midfielder in the world?

Kevin de Bruyne was voted best midfielder in Premier League history,  ahead of Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in a premier league poll last year. De Bruyne’s performances over the past six seasons prompted comparisons to the legendary trio, who are regularly the topic of debate about who is the best. It’s interesting that De Bruyne would now be ahead of the original three, who all played for bigger clubs than the Belgian international.

All his success only makes the comments said when he moved to England from Germany in 2015 all the funnier, with pundits of that time unimpressed with his £55 million transfer to Manchester City. Right now he can make a legitimate claim to being not only the best midfielder in the Premier League’s history, but in the world, which is quite the achievement.

Manchester City’s midfield genius has been considered one of the best players in the world for a few years now, but in October 2022, his place among the world’s greats was cemented at the 2022 Ballon d’Or awards. De Bruyne was voted the third best male player in the world, beaten only by Bayern Munich attacker Sadio Mane and Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema. The 31 year old seems to get better each passing season, and this campaign has already seen him set up 23 goals, scoring 7 as well.

With his contribution in all four premier league title wins in the last five years, the Man City star has been the main man behind the success of the club, coming up big for all the big occasions and cementing his status as one of the greatest in the Premier League. With all these achievements, it’s fair to say he’s one of the best in the world, if not the best.
