It took several years, several stars coming and going, eras, legendary eras, but Paris Saint-Germain have finally laid their hands on their first ever Champions League title, and they did so in style, being the first team to ever win the trophy by five goals.
It is an extraordinary way for Paris Saint-Germain to win the Champions League for the first time in their history. It should mark the end of a journey, but for Luis Enrique’s young team their 5-0 win over Inter Milan feels like the beginning of something special. PSG played their game and executed their plan so well that they were two up before half time, and five up at the 85th minute. The referee saved the Italian team from further humiliation by sparing them stoppage time.
Simone Inzaghi’s men aged before their eyes. Statistically the oldest side in Serie A this season with an average age of 29, PSG were far too quick for them from the outset, winning possession high against a surprisingly slow paced Inter, who never looked like they were coping all game.
This was Doue’s night, as the youngster dazzled all night, assisting Hakimi for the opener and then getting the second and third goal that sealed the game.
In Gianluigi Donnarumma, PSG had a reliable and outstanding goalkeeper in the competition, and complemented the outstanding 10 outstanding players. Willian Pacho alongside captain Marquinhos is the sort of smart signing PSG needed to make. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s arrival in the winter transfer window was the final piece in the puzzle, also allowing Luis Enrique to rest his attackers enough to keep them fresh. That the fifth goal was scored by a teenage substitute born on the outskirts of Paris, a product of the academy, was almost too perfect. Senny Mayulu seemed in shock himself, his celebration suggesting that even his dreams did not include him capping the night.
“It’s a mix of joy, of all the emotions we’ve spent together,” PSG defender Marquinhos said after the game. “I’ve suffered, but I’ve grown up with this team. I think of all the players who have come through and not succeeded. My idol Thiago [Silva], Lucas, Zlatan, Cavani, Di Maria.
So many players who have come through here who deserved this and didn’t succeed. Now we’re here and we’re bringing it home. I’m thinking of all the supporters who have been with us, those at the Parc des Princes and those around the world. I love you, enjoy it and we’re going to enjoy it here. This is the best day of my life.”
