The Red Devils secured a new addition up top for manager Erik ten Hag last August, signing one of his key players from his former club Ajax in Antony Santos. The Dutchman looked to build his team in his mold after taking over in May and the latest signing is the statement, making him [Antony] Man Utd’s second-most expensive signing ever behind Paul Pogba.
The 22-year-old scored 24 goals and assisted 22 others in 84 games for Ajax but according to former Netherlands star Marco Van Basten, Manchester United, Antony, and Manager Ten Hag all have a couple of questions to answer. “Antony worth €100m? No, by far, no,” the 57-year-old said at a talk show, weeks after the transfer. “Antony hasn’t proven much yet” he continued. “Of course, he played a few good games. But his efficiency has never been so high in his career”. The Dutchman claimed at the time that “something is wrong”and that the move was “ridiculous”. The Brazilian winger Santos has scored 7 and set up 2 in 22 appearances this season, but unfortunately it hasn’t been enough for fans and legends of Manchester United. Following his disastrous performance against Arsenal, United’s center-half legend Rio Ferdinand slammed him, saying “he can’t beat anyone” he said. He further continued, saying “The concerning thing for me with somebody like Antony is that he can’t beat anyone and for a Brazilian, that’s surprising,” speaking on a podcast. “He just doesn’t beat anyone and I’m sitting there thinking, ‘Was that always the way?’. Antony hasn’t lived up to the price, and that hasn’t gone down well with the supporters.
